How to Prevent Baby Acid Reflux

Recent statistics show that one fifth or so of the eight million babies born each year in the US suffer from acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and babies that face developmental or neurological challenges are even more at risk from this complaint. Baby acid reflux is a condition that remains incompletely researched and that is often subject to misconceptions as well.

In a healthy person, there is a circular muscle acting as a valve at the junction of the stomach and the esophagus (called the lower esophageal sphincter) and stopping stomach acid from flowing back up the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux disease happens when that sphincter cannot retain the acids in the stomach. These then move into the throat sometimes as far as the larynx. In simple terms, GERD is a mechanical problem in the digestive system, which can be corrected. Numerous symptoms can result from GERD leading to complications like infections, pain, ulcers, difficulties in eating, vocal disorders and even cancer in the long run.

In addition, reflux condition is easy to confuse with usual vomiting in babies. For the first 3 to 4 months of an infant's life, frequent vomiting happens in 50% of all cases, peaking at 4 months. Vomiting is both painful and distressing when caused by acid reflux. Because infants cannot speak about their feelings, it is difficult to determine if they are suffering from a medical problem. Baby acid reflux can be particularly challenging to diagnose and treat.

The best solution for the right diagnosis of infant gastroesophageal reflux disease is to have a specialist diagnosis performed by an ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor or a gastroenterologist. To correctly diagnose infant GERD, several further symptoms need to be identified. Besides sporadic vomiting, these symptoms include: infections of the middle ear, enlargement of the adenoids, abdominal pains, asthma, crying non-stop, anemia, waking in the night without reason, vomiting of blood (hematemesis), continual coughing, a high-pitched sound when breathing, repeated croup, reluctance to feeding and inflammation of the nose and the sinus.

Possibilities for remedies to gastroesophageal reflux disease can be: medicaments, surgery and holistic programs. However, even for adult patients, surgery is rarely an option in normal situations. For baby acid reflux, neither medicament nor surgery is optimal answers. Medicaments may be sub-optimal in particular for infants for any of the three reasons below:

1. Medicaments for GERD treat merely the symptoms but do not fix the deeper cause of the condition.

2. Medicaments for GERD can impact an infant's immune system, leading to weakness and vulnerability in immunity, possibly also leading to different health complications other than acid reflux as well as the worsening of acid reflux condition.

3. Medicaments for GERD can cause multiple secondary effects that are present but hidden in infants.

The optimal solution to baby acid reflux is a holistic one while taking into account an overall set of changes in diet and lifestyle. Strong support is lent to this concept by research done recently. Research demonstrated that a transition to soy-based formula from cow's milk based formula gave infants a 40% recovery rate. Other research showed acid reflux symptoms juice products as an aggravating factor for infant gastroesophageal reflux disease. Altering feeding and sleeping position was also seen to be of benefit in treating baby GERD.

Where Have All the Gym Rats Gone?

With the advent of technological advances in our world, our lives have become easier and more comfortable. Each year ushers in a new throng of new products and upgrades that advertising tells us we must have. Technology has impacted the sports world in hundreds of ways. Some would argue that these advances have both helped and hindered the sports we love. In this article I will focus on the dwindling interest our younger generation shows toward the greatest game on earth.

As I drive up and down the street in my neighborhood I see many basketball hoops on both sides of the street. Some are nailed to the garage or sunk in yards of concrete. Most are part of a fancy system that includes a goal, pole and base. Many of them can be adjusted by a 5 year old from 10 feet down to their preferred height. These units are easy to set up and available at almost any superstore or internet web site.

From the number of goals that line the streets of America's towns and suburbs, you would conclude that kids love playing basketball. Back yards are void of soccer goals, goal posts, or baseball fields. From what I see, basketball is the only game in town. Am I right or am I wrong?

For some reason these goals sit alone and unbothered in driveways up and down the street. There are very few kids hoisting shots toward the shiny orange rims. Not in the the fall, not in the winter, not in the summer. A few shots are taken in the spring when its easy to be outdoors in the fresh air. All of this leads me to ask the perplexing question, "Where are all the gym rats?"

Our world has made being a kid quite an undertaking. Electronics have taken over the lives of our youth. Cell phones, iPods and Playstation have captured the imagination of an entire segment of America. Is this bad news for our younger generation? Some would argue these worldly improvements are part of life. Those of us who love the game of basketball disagree.

Shooting hoops in the driveway always gave me a great sense of freedom. The ability to shoot for hours alone represented a lot of my time as a young player. With sadness, these days I rarely see this kind of expression of love and freedom. It hurts to know that kids are paralyzed in front of the LCD screen, computer flat panel, or Madden 2007. What happened to shooting the shot that wins the imaginary NCAA tournament, State Tournament, or NBA Title. Isn't it fashionable to dream anymore? Are we living out these experiences through a video game or other lifeless channel? What happened to the dreamers in our world?

Maybe it's my stubbornness or traditional approach to the game. Maybe it's because I dedicated my professional life to the game James Naismith invented. Or maybe it's because I see too many kids without this level of love for basketball. An empty heart has no love for anything. Whatever the reason, I find myself asking the same haunting question, "Where are all the gym rats?"

Bath times can be made enjoyable for babies with right baby bathing practices. Babies during their initial days may not really like them being taken to water. You can give them a sponge bath during the first month and then introduce them to a bathing tub in the subsequent months. Types of Basketball Hoops

This kind is most of the time not as strong as wall mounted and in-ground types but probably most popularly seen in backyards of houses. In-ground - If you are looking for a more permanent choice and you already knew where exactly to place your hoop then in-ground basketball hoop is the one for you. Although, this is also seen installed in some houses, in-ground types are mostly seen outdoors and basketball gyms. In-ground basketball hoop is installed by firmly cementing it or nailing it on the ground. This type is stronger than the portable hoop because of how firmly it is installed. Therefore, if it is already installed, then there is no way you can move it to another place, not unless you destroy the ground or gym floor. So in getting this, you must make sure that it is placed exactly where it is supposed to be.

Wall mount - This kind of hoop is only seen indoors for it is installed on the walls. This is a good choice if you do not want the basketball poles to occupy a needed space. Some people prefer this compared to the in-ground hoop because it eliminates the danger of players bumping on the hoop stand. The only bad thing about wall mounted hoop is that it occupies some of sit spaces for audience.

Adjustable - This is most popular for basketball courts in schools because this type of hoop's main feature is it can easily adjust its height. It has a device that enables you to lower down the pole or raise it, depending on whose playing. Lower down the hoop for kids in lower level and raise the hoop up for students in higher level. The only setback about this type is it is not as durable as the others. Dunking on this is not advised, for the pole might break in a shorter period of time if kept dunked on.
