Basketball Hoop Dreams Hoopla

Basketball bears a distant resemblance to it's early days, when the basketball net wasn't a net at all but a peach basket. Apparently James Naismith the inventor of basketball, had a keen intuition for sports, but not quite so keen on physics. The obvious problem with the impromptu basketball net, was that there was no hole in the bottom for the basket ball to fall through. I sure we've all seen the commercial where one of the players has to climb up the ladder to retrieve the basketball after each score. The brilliant solution by Mr Naismith, was of course to cut a hole in the bottom of the basket. Seems like an obvious solution to those of us versed in the modern game of basketball, but wait the punch line is yet to come. The hole they cut, wasn't big enough for the basketball to fall through. It was however, big enough for a person standing on the floor to poke a broom handle through and push the basketball ball back up through the top. Funny how the obvious is not always so obvious to those at the time. In spite of it's somewhat comical beginnings, basketball has truly evolved to one of the premier sporting events in the world. I bet James would be thrilled to see his little game today. I hope.

Dusting Jack

Basketball had quite a few funny quirks along the road to success. One of the early interesting rules would have pretty hilarious consequences today. In today's game of basketball, when a ball goes out of bounds, the last player to touch the basketball ball, is ruled to have been responsible for putting the ball out of play, and therefor his/her team loses possession of the ball. Things were a little different with the original basket rules. In the original game of basketball, the first player to retrieve a ball that had gone out of bounds, earned possession of the ball for his team. I suppose that makes sense when your first playing the game in a gymnasium, with one gym teacher, who doesn't want to have to retrieve every out of bounds ball. Why don't just let the players retrieve the basket balls. Ha! Could you imagine the melee that would occur in today's professional games, if that was the rule. I can just see Kobe Bryant climbing over Jack Nicholson, spilling his drink, knocking his glasses all cock-eyed in a furiously desperate attempt to grab the loose ball before his opponent. Comical . . . yes. Hilarious . . . yes. Entertaining . . . yes. Likely to be adopted by the NBA . . . not frigging likely. We can always dream though.

Entertainment As Sport

Basketball certainly has to be one of the more successful forms of sports entertainment today. From all the pre-game theatrical dramatics (Ala the Micheal Jordan era Chicago Bulls) to the bad boys that seem to be prevalent in any sport, but especially basketball. In spite of the fact that most basketball games are decided in the last few minutes of play, it is truly an exciting game to watch and play. Especially if you get the opportunity to view a basketball game live. Highly recommended. Those guys make the television guys look like their moving in slow motion.

Ways You Can Exercise at Home Without Expensive Equipment

Everyone is concerned about their health and it is being raised as a top level priority that diet and exercise should be a part of the daily ritual no matter that you are busy. It is now a concern of the WHO that more and more Americans are getting malnourished by the minute and the number of heart attacks has raised considerably because of an unhealthy lifestyle.

Going on a diet is easily accomplished and it could also be a great shift as this will keep the budget better. Fruits, vegetable, fish and water are much cheaper compared to a lot of red meat and pork and chicken which have become very expensive and unhealthy because of the steroids and growth enhancers that are fed to them.

The difficult part to accomplish is the exercise. Most people are under the mistaken assumption that when exercising, they would need all the home gym equipment to exercise at home or have to pay staggering fees for a membership in a private gym.

When talking exercise, it means that you have to move and that means you can move your body without really having to rely on machines. Move by walking. Walking a flight of stairs is a good cardiovascular workout and it is also good for the buns. You don't need a Stairmaster to go up a flight of stairs several times, right?

Next, don't just lie around and wait for the trash to pick itself up and go outside, neither will the dust sweep itself out of the house, neither will the bed fix itself. This is not Hogwarts and there are no house elves to do the job for you. Get up, grab a duster and broom and move! Clean house, before you know it, you are sweating toxin-full sweat. How do you know there are lots of toxins? Well, the sweat smells rancid for the first few times that you sweat, continue to do so regularly and notice the difference in smell.

Another is play! Children are not the only ones who can play, adults need to play too. Run around with the dog who will love that exercise and will love you too, if no dog and you only have a bird, then look for something else like a hula hoop. Hula hooping will make you develop a 6 pack after a month or two of using, so yes, even men should hula hoop.

Another toy? How about the jump rope? Manny Pacquiao uses that when he works out and definitely has competitions with his sons at home. So if a world class boxing champ can play with jump ropes, no excuses you can't either.

Jogging or running is not for everyone as it can place pressure on the knees. Clear with your doctor first if your body can take the pressure. If you are cleared, then start slowly. Do not think to jog 15 miles the first try. Jog for certain lengths and then slow down, gradually build your strength and increase the distance every week or so. Once the body gets used to the jogging, you would know because you won't feel as tired as when you first tried.

Workout videos can be bought anywhere, hey, there are even some online which can be downloaded for free. Instead of eating pizza and drinking beer all day in front of the TV, get up and have some fun with the workout or dance videos. Yes, dancing is great exercise too, so no excuses there either.

It is important to exercise the toxins away from the body and develop good muscle. Don't think that expensive equipments and gyms are the only way to exercise, do it from home or the great outdoors and develop a great body for free.

Dunk Training Takes a Vertical Increase

We always here athletes talking about their "vert" meaning their vertical leap, or jump. The vertical jump is the amount of inches they can lift off the ground which can range from 20-50 inches and with the proper dunk training you can be at 50 inches in no time at all. Let's cover aspects of this vertical increase.

Power drills in strength and agility will greatly increase your vertical. With dunk training you must increase your leg muscles so you can have a great lift off when dunking. Plenty of workouts will strengthen your leg muscles the most popular exercise is squats. Squats put pressure and weight on your legs therefore forcing your legs to push the weight up and down in repetitions.

Dunk training to increase your vertical will take quickness to your strength. This normally comes from plyometrics. These are boxes or steps which are about one foot high from the ground. When these boxes are used correctly they will have your body reacting like a spring as soon as you touch the ground you will immediately hop back up in the air. This is great for dunking and getting rebounds in basketball.

Lastly to increase your vertical I advise heavy jump roping. This exercise gets the heart rate up and keeps you quick on your toes. When you jump rope the routine of jumping up and down on your toes increases your vertical and strength in your foot. This will make you a better player and increase your endurance and wind in your body.

Basketball Training - 4 Important Rules of Passing

Rule #1 - Look for the Open Player

Nobody enjoys playing basketball with someone who doesn't pass the ball to open teammates. We all know that on every team there are a few players that are usually more talented than others. Just because player A is more talented than player B does not mean the shot should always be taken by player A. A few years ago I was playing in a city league and we were in the championship game. The game was tied and I was determined to beat my man and get a basket to win the game. As I drove to the basket I saw an open teammate and out of instinct I passed him the ball. It caught him off-guard and he missed the shot. Before overtime he came up to me and was upset at me because I didn't shoot the ball. He said that me shooting the ball with 3 defenders in my face was better than him shooting with nobody on him. I got his point, but as a teammate it was my job to get the best shot possible and I'd do the same thing today. Nobody likes to play with a ball hog.

Rule #2 - Trust Your Teammates

I knew the guy I was passing to might not make the shot, but I wanted him to feel like I trusted him. It paid off later in the game as we went on to win in overtime. I know it is city league, but it is still an illustration of how to execute in the great game of basketball. Trust the players you are playing with and build that up. Don't tear it down because nobody will want to play with you. If you are more talented than most of your teammates realize that it is a guaranteed fact that somewhere on another court there are players twice as good as you and hopefully you'll have the chance to play at their level. When you reach that level you have got to know how to play team basketball and execute.

Rule #3 - Learn and then Practice Solid Fundamentals

When you pass, take a strong step toward the player you are passing to. Don't throw it flat footed. Throw the ball with a purpose and learn to snap it to the wing or throw a solid entry pass to the post. Try to avoid slow soft passes as they turn out bad. All these fundamentals can be practiced. I had a toss back that I used in high school that was my best friend. It was my only friend that stayed after practice with me and I would throw pass after pass into the net until my arms hurt. Every school should have one for practices. I loved the toss back. The other night I was watching some old high school tapes of mine. Yes, I still like to live in the glory days. I was watching games when I was a sophomore, playing varsity and I was sickened. It was my first real year playing point guard and I threw change ups to the wing players. Terrible, slow passes that the defense would miss by inches each time. But as the year progressed you could see my progression as a player and I was proud of that. I was proud that a coach taught me the simple fundamental of throwing a crisp pass. It makes so much of a difference. You'll be amazed.

Rule #4 - Work Hard

It doesn't come easy but is something that can be improved with hard work. You won't wake up and be a good passer. It will only come through work and study. I made it a point to really have a grasp of my offense because if I knew where my teammates would be and where they liked to get the ball then we would have a great chance of winning the game. Watch game tapes when possible. Watch how the defense reacts to certain plays. Watch to see where your teammates like to shoot from on the floor. Watch for areas of obvious improvement like passing angles and spacing. Those things are so easily corrected that a small adjustment will make you better for it. Remember that coaches look at assist to turnover ratio and they really monitor point guards with that. They look at a 3:1 ratio as being solid. The higher the better as that means that you would have 3 assists for every turnover. If you are 1:3 then you have problems and you'll soon be sitting on the bench if you aren't already.

This arrived quickly from Amazon and the directions were good. I'm a 41-year old mom and I put this together by myself. I needed our wheelbarrow to prop it up. It took me about 90 minutes. I tried to put sand in the base, but the hole is so small that it was taking forever so I finally filled it up with water (I'll remember to dump it in the winter before it freezes).

This is for my 5 year-old. He is autistic; he had a Little Tykes basket and would just make 10-20 baskets in a row, it was amazing, but it was already on the highest setting. So I upgraded him to this one. After it was up, he took 4 shots and they all missed; I was a little worried that it was too tall even at the lowest setting. But then he just stood there, starring at the backboard for the longest time - and then his fifth shot went in. Now he loves it!! And it will grow with him! I love that!

In the beginning, all the founder of Lifetime Products wanted was a sturdier basketball pole for his backyard. With this in mind, he found and purchased a piece of heavy-duty used pipe, a sheet of plywood, and a basketball rim. The resulting backyard basketball standard functioned perfectly in his backyard. Seeing the potential of his hoop, he placed an ad in the local free classified newspaper and made his first sale. The rest--as they say--is history. He created the American PlayWorld Company in 1973, based out of his garage in Riverdale, Utah. After expanding into several other types of playground equipment, he eventually moved to a bigger location in South Ogden, Utah. Several years later, the company transformed the basketball industry by introducing the Quick Adjust basketball pole, the first complete basketball system you could raise and lower with a broomstick. In 1986, American PlayWorld created Lifetime Products, a separate company intended to concentrate specifically on manufacturing adjustable basketball systems. In the ensuing years, the company has grown from having 18 employees in a 32,000-square-foot space in half a warehouse to more than 1,400 employees and 2.6 million square feet over 23 separate buildings.

Very nice and functional. Harder to install than indicated in the instructions. Took 4 people 4 hours to assemble. Also delivery info very deceiving, at order time suggested shipping date was a week plus a week for delivery. This was too long for a typical Amazon order. But in actuality it arrived in just a week. Shipping info in general should be more precise.

The Safe and Secure Way of Installing a Basketball Hoop

If you enjoy playing basketball and want to improve your game, then you should consider adding an in-ground basketball hoop outside your house. Having the luxury of walking out your front door, picking up the ball and practicing is a great way to becoming a better player.

An in-ground basketball hoop is the most authentic hoop to have in a home. There are other options, such as a garage hoop, but if you can spend a bit extra on an in-ground hoop it's easily the better option. Many people are intimidated when it comes to installing an in-ground hoop so I've created this article to help you understand how simple it can actually be.

Before you begin to unload any of the parts of the hoop, make sure you have all the right tools and materials. You'll need concrete mix (850lbs of concrete) and a wheel barrel to mix it in. You'll also need water, to make the mix. Other tools include a ladder, several screwdrivers, a tape measure, a shovel and a wrench. You'll also need a marker.

If you are missing anything from this list, I highly recommend you find it or buy it. Borrow from the neighbor if you need to. If you try to do the installation without some of these tools, it can only lead to a hoop that's not properly and safely installed. If it's done right, the hoop can last for many years.

The next step, which you've probably already planned out, is finding the right place to install the hoop. Some people will go as far as finding a grass area and making a court, but it's most common to position the hoop on the driveway. The most important part is that the area is flat. By playing with slopes, bumps or holes, it's just an injury about to happen.

Once you're comfortable with the area, you may begin working on the hoop. It's not very easy to move the hoop once it's down, so it's important you're sure about the placement.

First mark a spot on the pole 18 inches from the bottom. This will help you indicate how deep the pole will go into the concrete hole. Then dig a hole. The hole should be 2 x 2 feet and 2 feet deep. Then proceed by mixing the concrete and filling the hole. Make sure the concrete mix is firm in the hole by patting it down. Then take the pole and place it in the hole. It should only go to the point on the pole in which you marked (18 inches). After the pole is in the ground, take your level and make sure it's straight. Continue by filling in more concrete.

After about 48 hours, the concrete should be solid and dry. Then you'll need to place the backboard and hoop together, which will then be placed on the pole. At this point, you should make sure the hoop is 10 feet tall and get ready to shoot around!

The Oklahoma City Thunder Have Come of Age

A new era has dawned in Oklahoma City. The city that just got its first ever major sports franchise just a couple years ago is now in a position where they're about to enjoy a competitive basketball team for the years to come.

This is all predicated on the fact that Kevin Durant remains part of the Thunder, but assuming he does, this team will be a force to be reckoned with for quite some time.

After getting out to a 5-31 start in their first 36 games last season, the team started out this year with an 19-17 record, easily the biggest turnaround in basketball and probably the biggest one in all of pro sports.

What is the secret to the team's success this year? It all has to do with a true superstar in the making, Kevin Durant.

While we're used to hearing about Kobe and LeBron these days, a new superstar is quietly making a name for himself, and the winning ways of his team say even more about his impact.

Kevin Durant will be a household name in just a year or two, and the world of basketball will certainly be better off for it. His scoring abilities combined with his great defense make him one of the most special players in today's game, and he could very well be considered the best at some point within the course of the next decade.

Rounding out this talented roster are two great talents in point guard Russell Westbrook and small forward Jeff Green, both in their second and third seasons respectively.

There's also James Harden and some other emerging young talent on the bench, and it should be very interesting to see where this team goes from here.

If the season ended today, the Thunder would make the playoffs as the 8th seed in the Western Conference. This is more than they ever could have imagined possible.

ACC Tournament Tickets - Better Get Them Early

ACC Tournament tickets are one of the most sought after college basketball tickets of the year, with all of the rabid ACC fans finding themselves under the same roof to settle the dust on a long and hard fought basketball season.

This year the ACC Tournament is being held in Atlanta, Georgia, which allows for greater seating but is a departure from the ACC's most common location in the state of North Carolina. The 2009 Tournament will be in the Georgia Dome, most famous for being the home of the Atlanta Falcons.

Tickets for the tournament are sold in 'sessions' which means you get one ticket to watch two games. For example, there is a game starting on the first day at 12:00 noon and then another game at 2:00 pm. These games make up 'Session 1'. Then there are two more games in the same day in the same arena, one at 7:00 pm and one at 9:00 pm. Those two games are considered 'Session 2'. So, if your team is playing in Session 1, you could save some money by only buying session 1.

Of course, there are 'All Sessions' tickets, which means, naturally, that tickets (or 'strip' of tickets' includes all of the games on all of the days, through the entire Tournament. Buying the 'All Sessions' tickets allows fans to relax and not have to wait until the season is over to find out where their team falls in the Tournament bracket.

Fans want to see the tournament in person because It's not only a spectacular display of great college basketball, it's a place where highlight films are created, legends of the Atlantic Coast Conference are born and it kicks of March Madness. The winner of the ACC tournament gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, so a team can struggle through the regular season but still make the Big Dance. The most famous instance of this was the 1983 NC State Wolfpack, who had to win the entire tournament to get an NCAA tournament berth, then went on to shock the world by winning the national title a couple of weeks later.

A Brief Overview of College Basketball

Basketball is one of the most loved sports in the world today. It is loved by people from all walks of life and there are some real hardcore basketball fans in teenagers. Basketball is therefore played a school and college level. It's the college level basketball that is taken seriously as it forms a platform for the future national level players. College basket ball in America usually refers to American basketball competitive governance structure. It was established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Basketball in NCAA is subdivided into three divisions. There are 32 division I conferences, 22 division II conferences and there are 347 schools under division I. There are still several independent division I and division II schools that require conference affiliation.

Earlier the NBA used to select its players from college level teams. This was beneficial to the NBA because it didn't have to fund minor leagues but as the college level basketball games began to get commercialized it became increasingly difficult for the students to concentrate on the studies and also they dint earn any money for playing basketball. They also had little scope to get good coaching. This all changed with the NCAA. Several new laws were brought into existence to help students facing economic hardships at college level. Several players skip playing basketball at college level and directly play for the NBA. But all the players must be above 19 years of age during the calendar year of the draft. But the pervasiveness of the college basketball at the national level and the brilliant marketing strategies followed by the NCAA has kept the basketball at college level well and alive.

The rules for the college basketball are set by the NCAA basketball rules committee which consists of a team of three experienced coaches. Good coaches are a must for any team to succeed. Several teams have become successful by recruiting good coaches who make the team play together in a cohesive way with better consistency and sophistication. The total NCAA game is for duration of 40 minutes but it is divided into two halves, each half played for a duration of 20 minutes. 35 seconds is given by the shot clock for NCAA team to shoot whereas NBA shot clock gives only 24 seconds. NCAA allows the players to commit five personal fouls before fouling out and they are given ten seconds to move the ball past half court.

Do You Have to Practice to Be the Best at Basketball?

In pee wee basketball, there is no skill. The kids that are a little more developed than the others physically are the ones that get to play. Got a kid who's hit a growth spurt and if four or five inches taller than everyone? He's your center. Got a short kid that can dribble without dribbling off his feet, there's your point guard. Fill in the other spots.

When you get a little older, say grade or middle school, skill *starts* to enter into it, but even then its still almost entirely a function of growth. Bigger kids play, as long as they are coordinated enough.

But then as you get older, say early high school, talent and skill start to take over.

The kids that work the hardest are the ones that get to play.

But something else sort of funny happens too. Some kids with talent can still get away without working all that hard, that is to say, without much practice.

This happens so much so, that some really talented kids don't practice at all, they just skid by on their talent. They can usually get away with this until the highest levels of high school basketball (varsity basketball).

So in light of this, how important is practice really? If you can get by without it, then why bother??

Here's a little story someone told me a long time ago about Larry Bird. You might not remember Larry Bird, he played for the Celtics around the same time the Magic Johnson played for the Lakers and even a little while Michael Jordan played for the Bulls. Bird was one of the greatest players to ever play the game, without a doubt. Not as flashy as Jordan, he still was amazing in every way.

Anyway, the story goes that every year, no matter how well the Celtics did (and they won a bunch of titles with Bird) Larry started practicing. Hard.

He started out each day with a five mile run and then practiced eight to twelve hours all day everyday. Of course, he had his own court to practice on, his own staff to rebound and guard him and run drills with him. And I'm sure he had his own trainers and chefs to feed himself and his staff.

The punchline of the story is that Bird used to say that he couldn't WAIT for the season to start so that he could take a rest and relax a little from all the hard practice!

Think about that and you will begin to understand a little bit just how important it is to practice and how much time and energy you should focus on it. To Bird, all the hard work was done in the off season to prepare. When the season itself rolled around, why, he only had to show up and play in the games for a couple hours a day.

Compared to the twelve hours of practice he would normally be putting in during the off season, the NBA season was a joke! And towards the end of the season when the rest of the players in the NBA were starting to get tired, worn out, injured, or just plain tired of playing, Bird was still fresh. He knew the hard work was still yet to come, next off season!

Bird was one of the greatest players in the history of the game. I don't know if that story is true or apocryphal, but it doesn't matter. The moral of the story is the same either way. The hard work is in the practice. After that you just have to show up and play! And games are just fun.
